Many times we have thoughts and dreams that we will be able to grow old and pass in the home we have had for the past 60 years. That is a great dream to have but sadly it doesn’t always happen. Our fragile human bodies sometimes have other plans than letting us live for 100 years. Because our futures aren’t certain we need to be able to adjust our plans.
These plans offer many new challenges. From the different thought work we have to do, to how we adjust. There are always decisions that are being made. This question can cause some anxiety in both the seniors and the rest of the family because of the thought of what is going to happen to most of the belongings in the house.

When the House Becomes Too Large
Determining when a home has become too large for a person to live in it can depend on a variety of factors, including the individual’s lifestyle, needs, and preferences. Some people may feel comfortable living in a large home, while others may prefer a more modest living space.
One factor to consider is the cost of maintaining and heating or cooling a large home. If the cost of upkeep is too high for an individual to comfortably afford, or if they find themselves spending more time cleaning and maintaining the home than enjoying it, it may be too large for their needs.
Another factor to consider is how the home is being used. If there are many rooms that are rarely or never used, or if the homeowner feels overwhelmed by the amount of space they have, it may be a sign that the home is too large.
Ultimately, the decision about whether a home is too large for a person to live in will depend on their personal preferences and circumstances. Some people may enjoy the spaciousness of a large home, while others may prefer a smaller, more intimate living space.
Often when we are down to either just the patriarchy or the matriarchy of a family the house this is when the family home may become too big. When this isn’t addressed this is where an overabundance of clutter or even hoarding may come into play. When 50% of the home isn’t being used it may be a sign that some downsizing could be utilized. When a person’s health has gotten to the point that a companion service could not help. This is when we have to start thinking of what to do next. There are still options available but are they viable options? You might be able to have a family member move in to help, or you might hire a private nurse to be with them. These are both options you can have yet many people don’t have the type of funds needed to be able to hire a private nurse. So what do you do?
You have to start looking at other options. Those options aren’t always what people want to hear yet there are several good assisted living centers here in the Elk City area. There is Baptist Village and there are around 11 different locations here in Oklahoma. There is also Homestead Assisted living in Elk City, Clinton, and Weatherford, OK.
Then again your loved one may have to go to a nursing home because of their inability to move or have developed a more severe illness and they need to move to a nursing home. I do understand that there are often thoughts you have about committing mom to a nursing home. These can at times be distressing yet there are some very good nursing homes here in Elk City also. There is the Elk City Nursing Home or Bell Avenue Nursing Center or Brookedale in Weatherford is a superb facility too. Then there is Corn Heritage Village and all that they do to keep the seniors there occupied and in good spirits.
If your loved one is having to move you then this is also a time for a transitional service to come in and help with the downsizing. In an assisted living facility they often have small apartment-like units You can’t fit a whole house in there but there is room for the most cherished items.
From there the senior and the rest of the family needs to decide what is going to happen to the rest of the belongings. An estate sale is often a good way to be able to give old belongings new life. Other people can often find little treasures and pieces of wonder in an estate sale. So that those items that are dear to you won’t just wind up in a landfill.
When the move is just too much
Another time to call a transitional service is when the move is just too much for either the family or the person who is moving. A transitional service can come in and do the work without the emotional hang-ups that often occur.
